Studies on the Ecology of Korean Native wild Orchids

Abstract
This work discussed, from the plant ecological point of view, correlation between natural distribution status of Cymbidium kanran and tree species growing in the orehid habitats according to the elevation of Mt. Halla, Jeju island in Korea.
10¡¿10m quadrats were laid out for the observation of frequency rate and density for every 100m elevation gradient of Cymbidium kanran sites in the mountain. Tree species keeping higher frequency rate and density were Pinus thunbergii, Castanopsis cuspidsta var. sicboldii, Quercus acuta, Daphniphyllum macropodum, Dendropanax morbifera, Styrax japonica, Rhododendron weyrichii, Smilax china, Viburnum crosum, Carpinus laxiflora, Calliicarpa japonica, Cornus kousa. Acer palmatum and Lindcra crythrocarpa, and the highest rate species were Eurya japonica and Camellia japonica.
P. thunbergii, C. cuspidata var. sieboldii, R. weyrichii, V. erosum and Elaeagnus umbellata were checked mostly in the low elevational area from 100m to 500m; however, P. densiflora, Q. acuta, Carpinus laxiflora, Cornus kousa, D. macropoda, L. crythrocarpa and A. palmatum were marked in high altitudal sites from 501m to 800m. Especially, Camellia japonica, Eurya japonica and Styrax japonica were distributed in all areas of the Cymbidium kanran habitat.
Total 80 tree species were recorded and 60% of evergreen and 10% deciduous tree were grown in the surveyed sites.
Number of trees growing in a 10¡¿10m quardrat was 61 as an average, although it was different according to elevation from the sea level. Yellow-green or white-green-leaf color variety of Cymbidium kanran was discovered only under the canopy of P. densiflora, P. thunbergii or Carpinus laxiflora trees distributed in the high elevational area of the Cymbidium kanran habitat.
